TITLE: Family Advocate, The Arc Livingston
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
EMPLOYMENT STATUS CLASSIFICATION: Part-time, 20-25 hours per week during the school year (training during summer 2025)
COMPENSATION: $20/hour
Position Summary:
The Family Advocate assists people with disabilities and their families by providing information, support, and assistance so they can make informed decisions as they work toward achieving their desired goals and objectives.
A flexible schedule is possible, between 20-25 hours per week during the school year, with training occurring during summer 2025. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Responsibilities:
- Assist families of children with disabilities age birth to 26 with navigating the special education and Section 504 processes
- Review school and medical documentation to help families understand and advocate for student needs, appropriate supports, and school-based services
- Regularly communicate with families, schools, and other agencies through email, phone, in-person, and virtual meetings
- Attend IEP and 504 meetings with families when requested
- Conduct research on and stay abreast of the latest Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE), Section 504, and Michigan Department of Education (MDE) rules, regulations, and guidance in order to effectively assist families in knowing their rights
- Provide information and make referrals to local and statewide resources to help students and families connect with needed resources
- Assist with agency learning opportunities and outreach efforts to the community
- Assist with agency programs and events
Desired Skills:
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills are needed
- Reliability, dependability, flexibility, punctuality, professionalism, and self-drive are required
- Strong attention to details and accuracy are required
- Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Word, Outlook, Google, Excel), ability to attend Zoom meetings, and experience working with online documents, databases, and reporting are required
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task are needed
- Research and independent learning skills are required
- Ability to handle sensitive information with the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality is required
- Commitment to The Arc Livingston’s mission is a must
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities is a plus
- Understanding of special education rules and regulations or work within the school system is a plus
